Over the last 15-plus years, Buckeye Power, North Central Electric Cooperative’s wholesale power supplier, and the other electric cooperatives that own it have invested more than $1 billion to upgrade the Cardinal Generating Station in Brilliant, Ohio, with environmental controls to meet today’s clean air standards. Today, Cardinal Generating Station is considered to be among the cleanest coal-fired facilities in the world.
Once again, North Central is providing an opportunity for its members to tour the power plant. Cooperative members will take a chartered bus Thursday, Sept. 14, to Brilliant, along the Ohio River in southeastern Ohio.
This all-day trip will depart from the cooperative’s office at about 7 a.m. Members will travel to Steubenville for lunch and then tour the Cardinal plant early in the afternoon. The bus generally returns to the cooperative’s office at about 7 p.m. North Central will pick up the cost of lunch and transportation for the day. Preference will be given to those who have not gone on the trip in the past five years.
The Cardinal plant tour takes 60 to 90 minutes and requires extensive walking, including stairs. Members with pacemakers should check with their physicians before requesting a spot on the tour.
