Students prepare to tour nation's capital in June

Danielle Coleman, 16, of New Riegel High School and Kerri Depinet, 17, of Seneca East High School have been chosen as the recipients of the seven-day, allexpense- paid trip to Washington, D.C., in the North Central Electric Cooperative 2009 Youth Tour awards program.

Danielle is the daughter of Ronald and Jane Coleman of Seneca Township, and Kerri is the daughter of Donald and Connie Depinet of Bloom Township.

Danielle and Kerri will be visiting Washington, D.C., in June along with representatives from many of Ohio’s other electric cooperatives. En route to Washington, D.C., they will spend their first night in Gettysburg.

The attractions they will see include the U.S. Capitol, Smithsonian Institution, Navy Yard, Vietnam Memorial, Mount Vernon and the Kennedy Center. They also will be guests on an evening cruise on the Potomac River. They will meet with Ohio congressional representatives and attend Youth Day, where the students will get information in hopes they will continue to support cooperatives and the rural electric program.

They are eligible to represent Ohio on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Leadership Council. If selected, they will be eligible to serve on the YLC at the NRECA convention in February in Atlanta.

Danielle has been involved in basketball, softball, band, Students Against Destructive Decisions, National Jr. Honor Society and Language Club. She participates in 4-H, Jr. Leader - ship, Jr. Fair Board, All Saints Youth Group and Teens for Life. She is a two-time National Machinery Citizenship Award recipient and winner of the county Americanism test.

Kerri is involved in the marching, pep and concert bands. She participates in soccer and has helped backstage for musicals at Seneca East. She is a certified lifeguard and enjoys studying biology and reading. She is very active in her church and has been a volunteer for many events.

The competition was based on the student’s scholastic record, a competitive examination consisting of general information about cooperatives, questions pertaining to North Central and a recommendation letter submitted by a school or community official.
